It is not to make you walk.
The stick, the crutch, or the walker is prescribed, primarily, to prevent your possible fall, only.
If you perceive the external support to be distorting your self image or your self esteem towards a ‘now irreversibly weak’ one, you are definitely on the lack of information out there.
1. Seek a second opinion, also for whether you need to use that prescribed stick or not.
2. Change of pace during walking, turning around, any pain during load carrying or weight bearing activities- if any of these pose a risk to your posture’s balance- as per your clinician’s assessment- then you need to understand that it is definitely better to be up and about with a fall safety device, than being in bed, anytime in future.
Fall safety is never a choice. It is an essential therapeutic goal in physical rehabilitation, for any age group.
So, next time your clinician repeats your need to use a stick, a crutch or a walker, ask right questions, rather than trying to make the moment pass on and allowing the ignorance to stick in your concerns.
Sorting out your queries would need quality time between you and your clinician.
