Does a Doctor’s Referring Prescription Affect a Physiotherapist’s Need or Authority to Assess a Client?

“How much time does a physiotherapist need to assess a client properly?”

“On an average, it can be between 20 minutes for a superficial, very localized pain, to upto an hour or more, for multiple issues of pain, balance, posture and movement.”

“What if I go to a physiotherapist with my doctor’s prescription? In that case will he or she still take me through the assessment process?”

“Yes. A doctor’s prescription serves two puposes. One, it is a legally documented referral to a physiotherapist, which is a standard approach to do so. Second, wherever applicable, the doctor must mention precautions or considerations, required to design a safe physiotherapy program for any concerned client.”

“What is the safety point?”

“Let me explain this with an example here. Suppose a client has been operated for a fracture in leg and the surgeon needs him to not put any weight on the leg, for six weeks. So, the surgeon will mention this in the referral note, something like ‘referred to physiotherapist. Physiotherapy program must exclude weight bearing on the operated leg, for six weeks’. During the physiotherapy assessment, the physiotherapist will do a detailed interview, to know the client’s current state of health, his or her past health history, ongoing medication list, personal routines and habits and will go through available investigation reports and doctors’ prescriptions. The consideration mentioned in the referring doctor’s prescription will be then used to draw the safety line in the safety program, within which the therapeutic designs will be created and implemented.”

“So, you mean that merely knowing the doctor’s prescription points will not complete a physiotherapist’s overall actual program.”

“Yes, of course, Sir. Therefore, he or she will surely complete the required assessment process diligently.”
