Navigating Back Pain: The Importance of Professional Guidance by a Physiotherapist

He was crossing the road. Reached the middle of it, amidst traffic and suddenly a sharp pain crossed over from his left low back, gripping the upper portion of his left buttock.

He was stunned. Just couldn’t move a step forward. He tried turning and walking back to safety, but couldn’t move. The pain was intense.

He raised his hands, posing for the vehicles to stop, so as to avoid hitting him. A young man just happened to notice this all in-time and escorted him to the side of the road, safely.

This was the third time in the past two weeks, since he lifted that heavy sack of wheat out of his car at home, bought from the local market. The onset of pain, similar to what happened today, was immediate, but was more intense. He went to the doctor, was prescribed medicines and rest. He felt better in about 2 days time and ventured out again for work, with a precaution of not lifting or carrying an weight in hands, shoulders or back, to avoid straining his low back.

Still having two relapses in the past, this third time, a fear started settling in his mind.

“Is something serious happening there in my back?”‘ he used to think.

He feared being prescribed more medicines or a probable surgery. He wanted to avoid both, so avoided reporting back to his doctor, until now.

Still apprehensive to go to the doctor, he visited a local licensed physiotherapist, instead.

The physiotherapist’s detailed assessment revealed an active inflammation in the left piriformis muscle. However, the intensity of the reported pain and its presentation were quite suggestive of the need to have the support of medicines, for which the physiotherapist asked him to consult an orthopaedic spine specialist.

The client followed his advice, consulted an appropriate doctor, started on prescribed medicines and then completed two weeks of pain relief program without any difficulty.

A licensed physiotherapist therefore, understands the value of referring a client to a doctor in-time, as and where indicated clinically, before starting the needful physiotherapy program.
